Historical Surface Weather Data at 100 Airports

Overview

This data product provides a long-term record of hourly weather observations from station networks at 100 busiest airport in the world.

Observation sources include the World Meteorological Organization, Automated Surface Observing System, Automated Weather Observing Stations, US Climate Reference Network, and others.

Weather elements observed include sky conditions, visibility, weather type, dry bulb, wet bulb, and dew point temperatures, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, wind gusts, station and sea level pressure, altimeter, and precipitation.

You can use this data either for climate change research or renewable investment projects or extreme event analysis.

Station ID (station_id)

The union of weather Station identifier used by USAF (United States Air Force) master station catalog and NCEI (National Centers for Environmental Information) WBAN (Weather Bureau Army Navy)

Station Name (station_name)

Geographical name of the station

Latitude (latitude)

The latitude coordinate of a GEOPHYSICAL-POINT-OBSERVATION where Southern Hemisphere is negative

Longitude (longitude)

The longitude coordinate of a GEOPHYSICAL-POINT-OBSERVATION where values west from 000000 to 179999 are signed negative

Elevation (elevation)

The elevation of a geophysical point observation relative to Mean Sea Level (MSL). MIN: -0400, MAX: +8850

Call Sign (call_sign)

The identifier that represents the call letters assigned to a FIXED-WEATHER-STATION

Wind Direction Angle (wind_direction_angle)

The angle, measured in a clockwise direction, between true north and the direction from which the wind is blowing

Wind Direction (wind_direction)

Wind direction gives the geographical direction of the wind calculated by the angle. The angle is measured in a clockwise direction, between true north and the direction from which the wind is blowing.

Wind Type Code (wind_type_code)

A = Abridged Beaufort B = Beaufort C = Calm H = 5-Minute Average Speed N = NormalR = 60-Minute Average Speed Q = SquallT = 180 Minute Average Speed V = Variable NULL = Missing

Wind Speed (wind_speed_ms)

The rate of horizontal travel of air past a fixed point

Ceiling Height Dimension (ceiling_height_dimension)

The height above ground level (AGL) of the lowest cloud or obscuring phenomena layer aloft with 5/8 or more summation total sky cover, which may be predominantly opaque, or the vertical visibility into a surface-based obstruction. Unlimited = 22000. MIN: 00000, MAX: 22000

Visibility Distance Dimension (visibility_distance_dimension)

The horizontal distance at which an object can be seen and identified. Min: 000000, Max: 160000
Note that values greater than 160000 are entered as 160000

The temperature of the air

DEW Point Temperature (dew_temp_c)

The temperature to which a given parcel of air must be cooled at constant pressure and water vapor content in order for saturation to occur

Relative Humidity (relative_humidity)

The amount of water vapor present in air expressed as a percentage of the amount needed for saturation at the same temperature. It is calculated by using air temperature and temperature dew point.

Sea Level Pressure (sea_level_pressure)

The air pressure relative to Mean Sea Level (MSL). Min: 08600, Max: 10900

Precipitation (1hr) (precipitation_in_1_hr)

The depth of liquid precipitation that is measured in one hour observation in inches

Precipitation (3hr) (precipitation_in_3_hr)

The depth of liquid precipitation that is measured in previous three hours observation in inches.

Precipitation (12 hr) (precipitation_in_12_hr)

The depth of liquid precipitation that is measured in previous twelve hours observation

Precipitation (24 hr) (precipitation_in_24h)

The depth of liquid precipitation that is measured in the last day

Snow Depth (snow_depth)

The depth of snow and ice on the ground. Min: 0000, Max: 1200

Sky Condition (sky_cond)

Sky condition is a description of the appearance of the sky converted from sky cover layer code provided by NOAA
